Sell or license your patent
IP2GO-Pro helps patent owners (companies, universities, research organisations and individual inventors) sell or license patents they no longer need or cannot exploit themselves. The process runs from assessment and packaging to marketing to qualified buyers, negotiation and closing, under confidentiality throughout.
What we look for in a portfolio
- Granted claims, or applications with claims likely to be allowed
- Enough remaining term to matter to a buyer
- Coverage in commercially relevant jurisdictions
- Evidence of use: products, processes or standards that read on the claims
- Clear chain of title and maintenance fees paid up to date
- Existing licences, security interests or disputes disclosed upfront
How we sell or license your patent
Assessment
We review claims, validity risks, remaining term, family coverage and evidence of use, and tell you frankly whether the patent is saleable.
Packaging
We prepare a non-confidential teaser, claim charts mapping the claims to products or standards, and a data room for due diligence.
Marketing to buyers
We identify companies, investors and licensing entities active in the technology and approach them, anonymously if you prefer.
Negotiation
We negotiate price, structure (assignment or licence), warranties and timing, with a patent attorney’s view of the risks.
Closing
We draft or review the assignment or licence agreement and handle recordal of the transfer at the patent offices.
Selling vs licensing a patent
| Sale (assignment) | Licence | |
|---|---|---|
| What changes hands | Ownership of the patent | A right to use; you keep ownership |
| Revenue | One-off price, sometimes with deferred or earn-out payments | Upfront fee and/or running royalties |
| Control | The buyer decides on maintenance and enforcement | You keep control, within the licence terms |
| Ongoing costs | Annuities pass to the buyer | You keep paying annuities |
| Typical fit | Non-core patents, need for cash, exit or restructuring | Recurring income while keeping your strategic position |
What to prepare
- Patent and application numbers for the family
- Countries where the patent is in force, and the status of annuity payments
- Products, processes or standards you believe use the invention (if known)
- Any existing licences, co-ownership or security interests
Common questions

How do I sell a patent?
Start with an assessment of the claims, remaining term, jurisdictions and evidence of use. We then prepare a sales package (teaser, claim charts, family data), identify buyers or licensees who work in the technology, approach them under NDA, negotiate price and terms, and close with an assignment agreement recorded at the relevant patent offices.
Should I sell or license my patent?
Selling transfers ownership for a price and ends your annuity costs; licensing keeps ownership and can bring recurring income. The comparison table above sets out the main differences.
What makes a patent attractive to buyers?
Granted claims that clearly cover products or processes on the market, enough remaining term, coverage in the main markets, and a clean, documented chain of title.
